About Us!

Lighthouse Quilters Guild (LHQ) is a non-profit organization formed in 1981 by 18 women. The guild was incorporated on May 22, 1986. The purposes of the Guild are (1) to promote the art of quilt making and related textile areas; (2) to provide educational opportunities; (3) to encourage the sharing of members' talents and fellowship; (4) to share the quilting arts with the community; and (5) to preserve our quilting heritage.

There are 11 meetings a year, held on the last Monday of each month, January through November (except May - that month's meeting is held the week before Memorial Day). The meetings are held at 7:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection at 322 Ohio Street, Racine, Wisconsin. Times for the July potluck picnic and the November Christmas party are announced prior to the event. All meetings generally have a speaker or mini lessons, a short business meeting, a Show and Tell of completed quilts or other projects, and refreshments. The guild also has an extensive quilting library from which the members may borrow books and videotapes.

Membership is open to anyone interested in the art of quilting. The guild's year runs from January 1 to December 31. New members can join throughout the year. Dues for renewal memberships are due by February 28 of the new year. Yearly dues are $30.00. Each member makes a name tag for themselves. If a member forgets their name tag, they are asked for a 50-cent donation that goes toward the monthly door prizes. Each member is asked to participate on the Hospitality Committee once each year.

Service Projects

LHQ encourages members to participate in community projects. Members make and donate charity quilts for community organizations that are given out to comfort children and our older residents. We also make and send pillowcases to our troops overseas. So far we have sent out over 3000 pillowcases!

Every other year, the guild holds a quilt show named, "Lighthouse Legacies."
The guild members make a large quilt to be raffled off at the quilt show.
The members also make a large quilt that is raffled off only to guild members at the November Christmas Party.
Since 1992, the guild has sponsored the Margaret Lizdas Award at the Racine County Fair to the adult quilt exhibitor who has been judged to have the best quilt making skills. In 2004, the guild began sponsoring a Wisconsin State Fair prize: Best Use of Appliqué.
A monthly newsletter is published for the membership which is sent via e-mail or snail mail.
